DMV Checklist for Kowledge Test

(To get your learner’s permit)

AGES 15-1/2 TO 17-1/2:

Before heading to the DMV you will need to go online to begin the REAL ID application process. At some point in the application process the DMV will instruct you on what documents to gather and a code will be given to you. This code acts as an “appointment” so that you will be able to go to the DMV anytime to take the Knowledge Test. Once you have your code and have gathered the needed documents, you may then visit a DMV office.

(Tips: Arrive prepared to have your picture taken because your future license picture is taken on this day. I also suggest arriving at least two hours prior to closing to allow yourself plenty of time to finish. If you are not finished at the DMV when they are closing, they will have you return another day.)

What you will need to bring to DMV to take your Knowledge Test:

  • REAL ID Online Application code given to you

  • Pink Driver’s Ed Certificate of Completion (DL 400C)

  • Proof of Identity (such as birth certificate/passport)

  • Social Security Card (or proof of social security number)

  • Two Proofs of Residency containing your name and address. (If you are a minor without your name on address documents, show documents such as birth certificate or marriage license to trace your relationship to person whose name does appear on the residency documentation)
